On Thursday, January 16th, Edmonton had its first major snowfall of the year. I was driving home from a night class when the storm hit; an arctic blast of severe wind and snow, with icy gusts that swept big flakes across the night sky. Cars on the road were at a standstill with their blinkers on, so I pulled off the street into a treed alley. I had my camera with me, and decided to step out of my warm shelter into the chaos. The wind howled and nipped, and the snowflakes stung my face. But somehow it was oddly calm and peaceful out there in the darkness, completely alone in the alleyway surrounded by a wall of white. I pointed my camera up to the poplars and the street lights, my flash catching the orbs as they flew across the black sky. I felt happy to be there, right in the gale, braving the freshness, illuminating the branches until my battery died from the cold.
